NEW NATIONAL SURVEY SHOWS AMERICA IS BECOMING A NATION OF SERIAL DIETERS

Twenty Percent of Dieters Have Been on Six or More Diets in the Last 24 Months

MATAWAN, NJ, August 9, 2007 – According to a new national survey, dieting is becoming a way of life for most Americans, even though long-term results are rarely ever achieved. New research shows that in the last two years, women between the ages of 19 and 54 went on an average of three diets and almost 20 percent went on six or more diets.

The national consumer survey polled 400 women who have been on at least one diet in the last 24 months and measured their attitudes regarding weight loss and dieting. The survey was conducted in June and July by InsightExpress, a leading market research company headquartered in Stamford, CT and was sponsored by PacificHealth Laboratories, a nutrition technology company that manufacturers the diet product, SATIATRIM®. Full survey results can be found at www.satiatrim.com.

Some significant findings from the survey include:

Survey respondents also named lack of enough willpower as the top reason for not sticking to a diet. Other reasons were loss of motivation and lack of energy to exercise.

“What is surprising about these results is that overweight individuals do not lack the motivation to start a diet and, for the most part, they do lose weight when they diet,” said Dr. Robert Portman, Chief Scientific Officer of PacificHealth Laboratories. “Unfortunately, the data shows they never stay on their diet long enough to achieve their target weight. The average diet lasts a mere two weeks, and even though over half of the individuals in this survey were 20 to 40 pounds overweight, they lost less than 10 pounds when dieting.

“The challenge for health care professionals is figuring out how to keep people on their diet so they can not only get down to their goal weight but maintain it. The increased incidence of obesity in this country dramatically illustrates that quick fixes don’t work. We need to develop practical solutions that address the nutritional, emotional, behavioral and social causes of diet failure.”
